218 BC Hannibal crosses the Alps with his elephants
Fact about Hannibal: “Hannibal crosses the alps with his famous elephants - the elephants are generally what most people know about Hannibal’s army - what most people don’t know is the elephants all died before they could have any impact on Hannibal’s war in Italy. Hannibal proved to be one of the greatest generals of all time - and even without the elephants he manage to win several battles against roman armies which had a vast numerical superiority. No other general had ever scared Rome the way Hannibal scared Rome - and his exploits on the Italian peninsula is most likely the reason the Romans decided to destroyed Carthage completely when they finally conquered it in 146 BC.”
The Lo Stelino is a small hotel located on the road to Siena when you get to the hotel the first thing you notice is probably the high brick columns carrying a roof next to the hotel - there really isn’t much of a purpose to this construction since the roof seems to be too high for the shade during the summer - but it do stand out when you drive along the road. Lo Stelino is a bit of a distance from the centre of the city so you’ll actually need to drive to the centre Siena when you want to see the city.
The advantage of staying away from the centre is that the price is reasonable and there is free parking available at the hotel so you don’t have to worry about where you can park - which could be a problem at hotels closer to the centre. Though I am not sure there will actually be enough parking spaces on the hotel parking lot during the busy season. The hotel wasn’t too busy not even half the rooms were used - but the parking lot was still pretty full when I stayed there.
The staff in the reception all seems to speak English and they generally appeared to be quite helpful. There are also free wifi available at the hotel - but no options for internet unless you got your own devices with you.
My room was a bit on the small side - but admittedly I had chosen one of the cheap rooms with shared bathroom - so the more expensive ones could possibly be somewhat bigger. Still the room did have what you would expect minus the bathroom part.
The breakfast in the morning cost an additional €5 - but it is quite adequate so if you like to get something in your stomach before heading out and explore Tuscany this is probably a good option.
There are not too many restaurants in walking distance from the hotel - I only found one which fortunately served both good pizzas and other traditional Italian food plus nice local wine - with the staff speaking mainly Italian and a bit of French and very limited English. I think I also saw a McDonalds - but honestly who will go to McDonalds when you are in Tuscany?
