Soarin' Over California Walt Disney World Reviews
A True Headliner Attraction Jun 18, 2009
Originally a headliner at Disney California Adventure, Soarin's twin in Florida has become a superstar in its own right. Although the left side of Future World boasts two huge rides (Mission Space and Test Track), this simulated hang-glider experience draws a large bulk of the early morning rush. The first riders of the day will zip through the queue area to a preboarding area in an airplane hanger. Safety instructions are reviewed via video; visitors are reminded to store carry-ons including Mickey mouse ears in the underseat pouches. Large bags will be taken by an attendant, loose sandals should be slipped off and left on the ground. Once everyone is strapped in, the theater darkens, the seats swing up, and suddenly you are drifting over clouds that clear for a fantastic view of the Golden Gate bridge. The journey continues over waves crashing against cliffs, a plunging waterfall, fly fishers in a wooded river, sunset surfers, daredevils skiers on a mountain top, desert dunes, colorful hot air balloons, busy nighttime highways, and of course Disneyland. While the sense of sight obviously creates the experience, sound and smell add that extra touch. Observant riders will notice several hidden Mickeys (hint: watch the golf ball).
Best seats: front row (no feet hanging in front of you then), center
Best way to ride two times without spending a lot time in line: get to the attraction at opening, send one member of the group with park tickets to the FastPass distribution (to the right of the ride entrance) to get FastPasses, then all meet back up at the ride entrance.
If you arrive in the park later and all FastPasses are gone and the stand-by sign indicates a long wait, take comfort that the line is one of the more entertaining ones in EPCOT. It has some interactive activities.
