Waste of time! May 11, 2011
I had one final day before I flew home, so I decided to head over to Cozumel with my own mask and fins and thought I would do some snorkeling. So on the $26 (return) ferry, I found out from some other travelers that snorkeling on my own wasn't going to be all that easy as there is no real beach and most of the access to the snorkel sites are via hotels which keep their beaches private...

SO I paid $22usd (down from $30) to go with some Eco Tour group that on the ferry advertised the trip as 3 hours long, 3 different snorkel sites and drinks included. It took about 20 mins to get to the first site, which to put it bluntly was crap. It was in about 7-9 meters of water, sandy bottom and very small coral. For the second site we took a 3mins boat ride to get there... This site was slightly better with a bit more coral, although still fairly deep. And the third side, we snorkeled to from site 2, which was in about 12+ meters of water, but actually had coral formations on the bottom, but it was hard to see even though the viz was great.

The marine life was minimal. The snorkel guide used bread to attract the fish which is a HUGE NO NO as not only is bread terrible for the fish's digestive system but it also makes them reliable on humans for food and less inclined to eat in their own habitat.

The total amount of time we spent in the water was 50 mins between all three sites. About 1/2 hour of boat travel and our 3 hours was apparently a 2 hour tour which was wrongly represented.

Some people actually enjoyed this experience as it was their first time, but as an avid scuba divers, I thought this was an incredible disappointment and waste of time.

For all the advertising on snorkeling in Cozumel,I did expect more. Hopefully the diving will prove very differently!

However I did milk them for the free Corona's at the end ;)

Surprisingly, the least fish and coral I've seen Aug 02, 2010
The free cost rating is because you're going to need a guide to take you out by boat, and they are all prices and trip lengths.

MANY people are shocked to hear that Cozumel snorkeling ranks at the bottom of my list of "best Caribbean ports for snorkeling". This list is based completely on my personal experiences.

The guides were friendly but not overly or personal. The trip took longer than expected because they stopped to pick up one of the guides buddies on the way. They also sailed slower than they could have to try and push buying their merchandise.

The cruise ship's description was "a reef snorkel for advanced snorkelers." A beginner could've easily done this trip. We did not go to a reef. the area they took us was so deep you couldn't see anything from the surface or with a snorkel dive. Very few fish and if there was coral, I couldn't see it because it was too deep for a snorkel trip.

I will give snorkeling in Cozumel a try next time I go. Maybe after my next trip, Cozumel will move up on this list. But for now, my experience puts it at the bottom.
