During our stay in Beijing in May/June 2007, we were absolutely astounded at the level of smog. Yes, it was very bad. On our last day and travelling to the airport, as I looked from the coach window, I realised that it was not possible to see the end of any roads....everything just disappears into the smog. Visibility of less than quarter of a mile. It was only at the end of our stay that we started to feel quite 'chesty' and uncomfortable.
My advice is for anyone who is prone to chest problems to consider carefully. I was constantly sruck by thoughts of how the atheletes will cope during the Olympics. It is tolerable but quite unpleasant.
