Smog in Beijing Reviews

Nov 04, 2007
During our stay in Beijing in May/June 2007, we were absolutely astounded at the level of smog. Yes, it was very bad. On our last day and travelling to the airport, as I looked from the coach window, I realised that it was not possible to see the end of any roads....everything just disappears into the smog. Visibility of less than quarter of a mile. It was only at the end of our stay that we started to feel quite 'chesty' and uncomfortable.
My advice is for anyone who is prone to chest problems to consider carefully. I was constantly sruck by thoughts of how the atheletes will cope during the Olympics.
It is tolerable but quite unpleasant.
The Birds Nest.

I was just there and didn't find it too bad. It was generally visible but I never felt smothered or breathless.

They are working really hard over there to clean up the city for the olympics. I was there in May 2006 and it was pretty bad though. You could literally look at the sun without squinting. It is not so bad a little ways outside of the city, around the Great Wall area it is quite nice.

Well i went in july 2006. It was quite tolerable. Not pleasant because we saw the sun like 4 of the 9 days we were there. Other days it was quite gray. But you could still see quite far away. It wasn't that bad. I can imagine it's a bit worse now all the extra traffic for the upcoming Olymics is around.
