Smile Society Boutique Bangkok Reviews
Calm & Excellently placed Bangkok Hostel Apr 08, 2012
Excellent location near Patpong night market, nearest underground station is Sala Deng but Si Lom is a mere walk away so it is easy to get to everything from here. If you want to go down to Khao San road for a walk on the wild side, jump into a taxi and ask them to put it on the meter to get the best deal - so much cheaper then negotiating the price beforehand. From the tube station, it is only a couple of stops to the waterside where you can get various ferries to different tourist attractions (watch out for the tourist ferry which is twice as expensive as the local white/orange/yellow flag services).
Although this is a big hostel as it has four bedroom floors on top of the reception and common room floors, it is quite quiet so you can get some piece from Bangkok - which frankly doesn't do quiet, but I'm assuming that's the reason you will have travelled to Bangkok in the first place :) The only problem with quiet is that it can be difficult to meet other travellers as you'll find that you never tend to be around when they are. In fact, for the first couple of days I was convinced that there was no one else staying in the hostel except me and my roomie - which wasn't the case at all.
I was staying in an 8-bed female dorm, with individual reading lights and a plug socket, there were individual lockers, big enough to fit rucksacks. To get into the rooms you need a key card which electronically swiped you in, the only problem was that it was a bit noisy and combined with having to shut the bedroom door quiet heavily, it could result in you waking your room mates.
The bathrooms were lovely and clean with two on each floor as male and female grooming was kept separately.
The cost also included a free breakfast between 8am-10am which consisted of muffins, rolls, tea/coffee and fresh fruit.
Bee and Nid are the ladies who run the place, both of whom are really lovely, you'll find one of them on or near reception at most times, if not the both of them. They gave me great tips in regards to travel to different areas and where best to go for various things locally.
There was free wi-fi, internet and there was on site laundry.
In my opinion, if you're staying in Bangkok and want good transport links this is your perfect option.
The staff are lovely and Bee and Nid both helped me with planning my days and how to get about. I met some other lovely travellers here and would recommend this place to others. Although this area is quieter than Khao San Road, it's busy in another way as Patpong is the Night Market, where you can get all of you fakes (I mean, designer goods) and practise your bartering and if you really want to, I 'hear' that as the previous red light district Patpong is the place to go for a pingpong show ;)
