A memorable lighthouse - or part of one Jul 24, 2010
Stand on Plymouth Hoe on a fine day. Forget about Sir Francis Drake playing bowls and waiting for the Spanish Armada. Look out to sea and way out beyond the breakwater, you will see a pencil sticking up - or what looks like one. If it is a very fine day, you may see half a pencil beside it. That was the bottom part of the third lighthouse built on the Eddystone rocks, 14 miles out. Then look much closer - on the Hoe itself. That lighthouse you see was the top part.

The first lighthouse on the reef was washed away in a storm, the second burned down. This one was unstable because its rock was wearing away underneath. A fourth one was built on an adjacent rock - that pencil you saw. Worried that Smeaton's lighthouse might fall and crash into the new one, the powers that were took much of it off and rebuilt it as a tourist attraction on the Hoe.

As a boy I loved taking our visitors up the tower and frequently went up on my own, up the long spiral staircase past the sleeping room and then up steep ladder type steps to the light - with a walk around the outside. I would do it again now if I could!

Brought back some lovely memories of my time living in Plymouth, had some wonderful times on sunny (or otherwise) days out on the Barbican and Hoe.
