Smart Russell Square Hostel London Reviews
Very cramped Apr 18, 2015
Very close to the British Museum, the Smart Russell Square Hostel is one good reason to stay at. It is close to the Russell Square Tube stop. From there, you would have to go around a block, to get to the hostel, in an entrance that is not clearly marked.
When checking in, you will have to leave a 5£ deposit in cash. There is an ATM nearby, if you need to withdraw cash. But if it does not accept your ATM, you can go to the nearby Tesco to use one there, which is across the street from the Tube station.
The dorm rooms are a mixed bag. On the one hand, they are very cramped, as if they tried to fit in as many bunk beds (which are actually triple instead of the usual double) as possible. So that leaves barely enough room to walk around. To make matters worse, there are compartments for bag storage, but they are an extra 3£. So what do people do? They leave their bags lying around, taking away the “barely enough room” part, so you have to step over people’s bags.
On the other hand, each bed has its own electric outlet, so you can charge your own devices right by you. Plus they have a curtain, giving you some privacy and shade if the light is turned on. A huge deal to me, since a lot of hostels do not have these.
There are a few toilet rooms, which fit only 1 person. And shower rooms for each gender, which has lockers and a bunch of shower stalls, looking like a gym. The shower stalls can be tight, and not much place to put your clothes and other items around, except on the floor. I hate to imagine what this place is like during the busy season.
Breakfast is included, and it is more than just toast, and okay. There is a kitchen, but I did not use it, so I can’t comment on that.
The common room area is full of picnic-like tables, and can be cramped as well. And not really inviting. There is no regular computer, but free WiFi. But the WiFi is very spotty and slow, which I find very annoying.
Also, have to warn, that there is a tripping hazard under the doorway between the 2 rows of rooms. When opening the door that swings both ways, there is some bump or step there. Maybe it’s just me being clumsy, but I nearly tripped over it twice.
The best thing about this place, is the combination of location AND cheap price. I could not find too many places that are both, especially in an expensive city like London. The hostel is a 10-minute walk from the British Museum.
I would say, an okay place to stay for 1 night, assuming you arrived in the morning into town, and plan to visit the British Museum that same day. And that is me being really generous. Other than that, there are better places to stay for longer stays, as I find the number of bad things to outweigh the good things.

Another advantage of this prime location is that we're only a short walk away from some of London's most famous tourist attractions, including the British Museum, Oxford Street and Soho. we're also only a short walk from St Pancras International train station.
There is no curfew or lockout and the transport links are so good you can party the night away until anytime.

The hotel has a state of the art key-card system that allows you to just wave your key at your door to get in. And if you would like to use a locker, we can program your key to operate that too. Lockers are located under the POD Beds so you'll never be far from your belongings.
