Come for the chaos Jan 28, 2017
Sloppy Joe's in Key West has a long and confusing history beginning with the repeal of prohibition in 1933, two name changes and a change of location. Suffice it to say that Ernest Hemingway once hung out here, which is honored by an Annual Hemingway® Look-Alike contest held in July.

It is a saloon, watering-hole, whatever you wish to call it. Its worn and basic furniture is complemented by walls covered with various aging memorabilia that add to the generally good-humored chaos. No reservations accepted. Come early. Seating is where you find it. We got lucky. They do have a music and event program that keeps the place hopping.

You are not here for the food or the drink. You are here for the history and the vibe. I did have a Sloppy Joe that was actually delicious with just the right amount of sweet and heat. The drinks are weak, but you will have a good time.

It draws you in Nov 11, 2009
This is a crazy bar in the heart of Key West. It draws you in when you walk by it. "Can all these people really be having this much fun?" Well you just have to go in for yourself and see. And you will .... for about 15 minutes. I have never been in this place where the lyrics of whoever is crooning doesn't turn to feminine hygiene. (A little funny at first). Then the excess consumption of alcohol loses its charm real quick. (They seemed so friendly at first). But don't take my word for it. It is a place only to be found in Key West. So go in, sit down and have a drink, you will definitely be smiling at some point and I am sure you will always remenber your time that you spent there :)

Sloppy Joes Dec 02, 2007
Sloppy Joes, on Duvall Street, is famous as a favorite hang out of writer Ernest Hemingway. The walls are filled with pictures and memorabillia of that time. The atmosphere was laid back when I was there in the afternoon. The bartenders were friendly. While just hanging back and listening I heard them tell some of the dirtiest jokes I had ever heard. Ask about the "Dirty Hook" and the "Verizon". If your are going to attempt the Duvall Crawl, you should absolutely make this a stop. They have a gift shop, if you want to pick up a tee or polo shirt.

sounds very interesting... they probably know how to make a good margarita as key lime pie is famous there.

I was in Key West for my honeymoon and we didn't know it was also the Hemingway Days. So most of my honeymoon pictures have Ernest Hemingway walking around in the background! We had a BLAST!

Yeah, that would be pretty sweet... But yeah, when you get a chance you can check their website and see the past winners. Something to strive for after retirement I guess...

Sloppy Joe's was a MAJOR LET DOWN! Jun 19, 2006
I and my companions were walking along Duval Street and decided to get dinner at the renowned Sloppy Joe's. When we got our table a band was finishing a song. Our waitress came and took our order and as she did the band was packing up. As we're waiting for our food the MC was saying that they had some stand-up comic coming on next and started saying that the next act was somewhat explicit. Unfortunately, our food and drinks had just arrived so, being good people, we decided not to walk out on the check and instead just eat really fast because how bad could the act be? Well, I have never been so degraded as a woman and so completely offended. Two disgusting men started to trash women as if they were nothing but garbage! I'm sure some of you are tempted to say it, but prude I am not. This crossed a major line of poking fun and absolutely debasing women. I was raised to be a strong, proud and confident woman...and to never stand for any sexism or harassment. People just passing by on the street were even subjected to this filth because it was so loud. I felt bad for the parents walking by with younger kids since this was going on at about 7-8pm which you could easily hear from the sidewalk. It's appalling that they would subject everyone to that garbage. Talk about taking a million steps back from how far women have come...and I'm not even a feminist, lol! This place is plain trash and I would NEVER go back! I'm so sorry I spent my time and money there.
