Warm, Hospitable and Just Plain Awesome Jul 08, 2014
If you're looking to explore Brussels, look no further than "Sleephere Guesthouse". While advertised as a hostel on many hostel sites, this beautiful residence feels more like a bed and breakfast. What's even better is that it's owner, Karel Mondt, makes you feel like you're visiting a foreign family member with his welcoming and engaging character.

Rooms are top-notch - spacious and clean with beautiful windows to let in that nice Belgian breeze. Bathrooms are fantastic. As a traveller I felt so at home staying here that I made sure to treat everything and everyone with profound respect. You almost feel lucky to be staying at such a beautiful place. Although I'm not sure of the age of the building, you could almost feel the history behind it. Very, very warm atmosphere.

Our host, Karel Mondt, spent time with each and every traveller discussing what they wanted to see in and around the city and his suggestions were excellent. I was so impressed by his dedication (he literally is letting strangers live alongside him in his home), that I made sure to find him a couple of rare beers in some Belgian beer shop I stumbled across just as sign of appreciation. Sipping back some Belgian brews and chatting on the back porch was a great way to cap off an evening (along with some competitive table tennis).

The most memorable part of my stay at Sleephere and what I looked forward to every morning, was meeting fellow travellers in the shared kitchen space (nice big table for everyone to have a bite together). With travellers coming in and out at all hours, you could bet to meet somebody new every morning over a coffee or croissant. It was a great way to begin your day and to plan excursions with new friends.

The only drawback, and this is solely for those lazier folk, is that it is not very central. While situated on a small, quiet, residential street, it still remains about a 20-30 minute walk to the Grand Place which is where you'll probably end up if visiting for the first time. What should be noted however is that despite not being smack in the centre of Brussels, it is within an area where you can definitely find good dining options (cheap or splurge), so you're never really that far away.
