Taking the sleeper train to Chiang Mai Jan 20, 2008
Taking the overnight train to Chiang Mai is a great way to get to Chiang Mai. There are three diferent departure times for getting to Chiang Mai. All the trains leave in the evening and arrive early in the morning.
There are three classes of train travel to Chiang Mai and I took second class. In first class you are given a lockable compartment for two people, second class has convertable bunks where you are given a choice of either an upper or lower berth, and in third class you are given a seat (with an option for air conditioned or non airconditioned). Food is also served on the train if you wish. It is typically about three times the price of food you can buy on the street so stock up before you get on the train if you do not want to pay the extra price for the food on the train. The bunks are fairly comfortable. I had an upper bunk and after climbing up the steep ladder I found it not so bad. If you are taller you would want the lower bunk because it has a little more room. The lower bunk also has the window. Each "bed" has it's own numbered curtain to give a little privacy and block out some of the light. Be sure to bring your valuables into your bunk with you to make sure they are there when you wake up. There are little hooks to hang a day pack on. The State Railway company has a website with schedules and pictures of the seats on the train at: http://www.railway.co.th/English/index.asp Part of the Thailand in 2008 travel blog |

The sleeper train from Surat Thani to Bangkok was a lot of fun. There were ~40 people in a carriage and two layered bunk beds on each side of the train which were surprisingly comfortable. We had dinner in the dinner carriage served by a lady… Northern Thailand |

We travelled on sleeper trains in both China and Vietnam and had mixed experiences as to the standard so we were a little bit worried about the trip in 2nd class Aircon from Bangkok to Chiang Mai. One of the problem with sleepers is that they obviously tend… Sleeper train Bangkok to Chiang Mai |

Their sleeper trains are one. We went to sleep in noisy, smelly Bangkok, and ten hours and one prison-car like sleeper train later, woke up in (relatively) clean Chiang Mai. There are a lot of things to do in Chiang Mai, which is known as New Switzerland… Nighttime |

…lunch, we rode in the truck back to Chiang Mai and I got dropped off at our guesthouse so that I could shower before heading to the train station for our sleeper train back to Bangkok.

We got to Chiang Mai after a long over night train journey from Bangkok, the train was actually quite good in comparison to the hard sleeper trains in China. There were only two bunks one large one on the bottom and a small one on the top. I took the top bunk but didn't really get any sleep all night… Kick Boxing and Lady Boys |
