Slavutich Hotel Kiev Reviews
Soviet Nostalgia Jun 08, 2011
Actually staying in a hotel anywhere in Ukraine is not entirely up to date anymore. It has become much more common to rent an apartment. Most apartments in the centre of Kiev are very affordable. They are also very nice and clean. The supply of apartments is so great that you only need to select a street. You will find a rental apartment anywhere you want. While the hotels are way too expensive which is totally unattractive.
At the time I was skeptical about the apartments in Kiev, but I know better now. Though I don't regret it at al! Because my search for cheap hotels brought me to the very authentic and famous hotel Slavutich.
Slavutich is probably the only affordable hotel in town. But there is one downside to this hotel. It's not really in the centre and it's too far to walk there. Once we tried to walk to reach the city, but after crossing the river we decided to take a taxi. It seemed so close, yet too far away.
Unfortunately there is even no subway near. So you are very dependent on the taxi's. Taxi's aren't that expensive, prices vary widely though. Negotiating about the price is definitely worth it. Each driver has its own price. Another possibility is a bus. Those are driving very regular and cost almost nothing.
The rest is quite good if you do not expect too much.
Hotel Slavutich takes you back in time to the Soviet regime. Everything is authentic here. From the building itself to the interior, furniture, smell, really everything. I became very nostalgic, in a good way.
But that also means that since the Soviet period relatively little has been done to this hotel. It looks a bit dirty here and there. Yet the rooms are very neat and tidy. A double room consists two small single beds. Totally perfect for me, but my husband is much bigger and didn't really fit in that bed. Same applies to bathrooms: very small and totally outdated. Looks dirty, but it was obviously cleaned.
Nice part of the room is a balcony with a view of the Dnepr River and the Mother Motherland monument.
There is also one small restaurant upstairs, which you can always visit. The menu is almost as nostalgic. For breakfast there are for example blinis with different fillings. Cheap and tasty! We have not dined, only drank some late in the evening before to go to bed.
Despite the Soviet charm the staff was very friendly and helpful. You see that they do their best to come over very westernized and to welcome their guests warmly.
Sometimes I had this feeling of paradox. On the one hand it seemed like the time completely stood still here. Yet the facilities were very contemporary, like the internet for example or an erotic night club.
The guests were very diverse. Mainly large groups of artists or athletes stayed there. And on the wall of fame can be seen which local celebrities also have visited this special hotel.

Not bad for what it is Apr 10, 2010
I had found the hotel Slavutich via www.tripadvisor.com. Searching for a cheap place to stay in Kyiv didn't yield many results, so the choice was fairly easy.
The hotel website's description says "a short metro ride away from the centre". What they fail to mention is that the metro station is also a short bus ride away from the hotel, or, in case you don't take the bus, quite a bloody long walk away!
That said, its location is not without merit. The views over the Dnipro river are stunning, even from the cheapest rooms, and the fact that the hotel lies in a residential area means it is quiet at night, and plenty of amenities like a supermarket, pharmacy, bars and restaurants are just around the corner.
When checking in I was immediately told that I had booked the cheapest room and that they had nicer rooms available as well. Well, my room was indeed dilapidated and old, but it was also clean and spacious, with all amenities (shower, toilet, TV, desk) included. So if they have
The only gripe would be that the Soviet-style balconies are rather small. Not really a place to sit down with a drink and admire the view. (which, from the higher floors, is terrific).
Breakfast is not included, but the hotel charges an additional 6,50 euro. Alternatively great coffees and decent sandwiches are available in the lobby bar.
There is paid wi-fi available in the ground floor lobby bar and 10th floor coffee shop, as well as in the executive rooms. However, the 16th floor Korean/Japanese restaurant offers free wi-fi which you are allowed to use even if you don't order a meal. That said, apparently this is one of the best Korean restaurants in town, so you might as well enjoy a meal while checking your e-mails.
All in all, for what it is this is not a bad place. If you don't mind the location and don't have too high expectations you won't be disappointed.

Cheap place to stay in Kiev May 31, 2010
Slavutich Hotel Kiev is located on the east side of the Dnipro River. I booked the hotel through booking.com because of the cheap price. Little did I know that the hotel is 8 km from the center of Kiev. Their website says that they are located near a metro station. What they don´t tell you is that the metro station is a bus ride away (bus no 249) or a 25 minutes walk.
It turned out that I had booked a single economy room. The room was small, not the cleanest I have seen and worn down. The bed was absolutely horrible. It was so old and used, I could feel all the springs in the mattress sticking into my body. The bathroom was small as well and in need of renovation. The room looked very much like something from the Soviet Union.
The room had a refrigerator, telephone and cable TV with a variety of Ukrainian, Russian, Polish, Korean, Italian, Turkish and English channels. Breakfast was not included, but for an extra €7 you can enjoy one in the café on the 10th floor or buy a sandwich in the lobby bar. The reception staff was nice and friendly and spoke English well.
If you are lucky and get a room at the west side of the hotel, which I didn´t, you will have a panoramic view of the Dnipro river, the gilded domes of Kiev-Pechersk Lavra and Vydubytsky Monastery.
I will most likely not stay here again, but I would recommend Slavutich Hotel to anyone who is looking for cheap accommodation and who doesn´t mind a bus and a metro ride to get to the attractions.
