Skyland is the limit... Oct 29, 2010
This splendid retreat from the masses was originally constructed in 1886, the site selected because it exits at 3,700 feet, the peak of Skyline Drive. Situated in Shenandoah National Park, Skyland offers a wide range of places to put down stakes, from basic rooms to rustic cabins. We really enjoyed that they have sections available for dogs and believe me, plenty of the folks we ran into took advantage of that option!

The only difficulty you might have with this facility is getting there. Located on scenic Skyline Drive, the famous roadway is quite twisty and a bit perilous when it is dark outside. But once you have arrived, all basic creature comforts are readily available. And in addition, the setting is superb and your room likely has a magnificent view over Virginia.

Facilities include a diner that features quality meals and a view that can’t be beat. It is a bit expensive, but a fair deal in my book. We found all of the offerings to be sufficient and a good value. When you factor in the setting it was a windfall to our benefit.

Skyland Lodge in Shenandoah National Park Sep 03, 2005
Skyland Lodge is one of two lodges on Skyline Drive in Shenandoah National Park. Skyland actually predates the founding of Shenandoah National Park. Conservationist George Freeman Pollock founded the resort in the early 20th century as a mountain retreat. Several of the rustic cabins he built are still in use. Skyland became part of the national park in 1937 and has been expanded and modernized.

Today Skyland offers overnight accommodations at the highest point on Skyline Drive (3680 ft. /1122 m). Guests can select modern motel-style rooms or one of the original cabins. Rooms are not luxurious, but are clean and comfortable. After all, visitors want to spend time exploring outdoors on the drive or on one of the park trails. Advance reservations for lodging are a must.

Skyland offers meals and beverages at its Pollock Dining Room or Tap Room. (Meals are not included in the room charge.) Skyland has its own stables where rides along its equestrian trails can be arranged. Park ranger programs are given at the amphitheater.

Skyland's Pollock Dining Room with its panoramic view is a great place to stop for lunch even if you are not staying at the lodge. The park's famous blackberry ice cream and Blackberry Sundae are served here, too!
