Imagine being surrounded by mountains everywhere you look and the further you are the bluer they appear. Welcome to Macedonia. A mountainous region where there is still a strong unique cultural identity.
From the moment you get off at the airport you see a sign "The Alexander the Great airport". Once you have seen this sign you know that you are in for an experience that will leave a huge impression on you.
The airport is located in the capital city Skopje. Skopje is an up and co...

There isn't much to see in Skopje. The city has a run down feel, with the parks overgrown and rubbish strewn along the sidewalk. People are friendly though and life is bubbles through in unexpected corners. The first place we came to was an ancient Turkish bath, which now houses the art museum. It has been converted beautifully, so you can still appreciate the high domed roof and latticeworks, while plain white walls show off the art to its best effect. The exhibits are mainly modern art and s...

One of my favorite places to travel to. Their money is still in Dinar, so to make a long story short, affordable! The women, well lets say that there must be something in the water there. But for sight seeing, Birth place of Alexander the Great, birth place of Mother Terresa. A lot of history in this little country, I highly recommend Skopje, and staying at the Holiday Inn.

MACEDONIA POET – IRMA DUMA
I discovered a wonderful poet from Macedonia named Irma Duma. Below are a couple of her poems in English:
THE BOREDOM SONG
Written by Irma Duma
One day, One night, One week, One year…One life!I count the hours, minutes, seconds passing by, I wonder when time will stop, when there will be no more clocks?Tic, tack, tic, tack…goes time again, so does the clock.I sit, I lay, I stand…And wait for the endless time to finally end!As I gr...

I had never intended on going to Macedonia, but it proved to be a good spot to get a quick flight to Croatia and to pick up my wire transfer of funds so I could continue my journey. I was there for less than 24 hours, but I was able to wander around a bit and get a quick feel of the city. It did spark my interest to possibly come back to this part of the Europe and explore more of Macedonia, Montenegro and Serbia. I have attached a couple of quick pictures of the old town center.

Setting off from Hong Kong in Aug 1992, 2 days after turning 22, I traveled China, Mongolia, Russia, Scandinavia, the Baltics, Eastern Europe, and the Middle East, returning to Hong Kong in July 1993. Apart from Athens/Cairo, I never set foot on an airplane during this year-long walkabout. Before the days of digital cameras, internet, and mobile phones, this solo adventure was as much a discovery of myself as it was about these 31 countries. Many of them, like me, have long since changed.

Skopje, Macedonia... just bussing in and seeing the quality of roads, finished buildings and other fine modern establishments proved to us continually how behind albania was. It felt like we had crossed into a rich, well off and balanced country. We had the same feeling when we visited Montenegro, and it was re-enforced again, Albania had a long way to go. So seeing all of that, pulling into the dreary bus/train station we were suprised to see the state of it. It was like a ghost town, sure w...

It was a really long night. The train creaked and groaned over mountains, and eventually people started getting off at various station and conductor found Zvonka a seat, crawling through the tangle of people in the hallway of the unlit train with a little flashlight. By morning, I was able to get enough room to lay down on the packs in the hall, and eventually migrate into the compartment. We ended up in a compartment with two Serbians heading to Ohrid like us, and an Argentinian. Everyon...
