The 411
------- (Source: WSJ) Located at One Park Avenue, the 14-story, smoke-free hotel is comprised of three separate towers with 225 guest rooms, including 20 one-bedroom suites and one Presidential Suite. Hotel amenities include the signature Park Avenue Grill restaurant, which retains the Art Deco look of the hotel's former interior design, the Red Piano lounge, a fitness center, indoor swimming pool, business center, 18,500 square feet of meeting and pre-function space and a Hiltons HHonors lounge. History Lesson -------------- The original Skirvin Hotel was Built by William Skirvin, who participated in the Oklahoma Land Run of 1889 and later made a fortune in land and oil. The Skirvin is near railroad depots and is an example of the grand hotels that prospered during the golden age of railroad travel. It is said that back in the day "If you were in the lobby of the Skirvin Hotel, whatever was going on in Oklahoma City would pass right in front of you." The recently re-opened Skirvin has a renewed luster, after being hidden away for almost 20 years as it sat boarded up. The New Standard ---------------- The Skirvin will now set the new standard for hotels in the downtown OKC area. When you walk in the front door you feel as if you have stepped back into the early 1900's to a brand new hotel - now with all modern ameneties. As I checked in I could feel the attitude towards impeccable service that the staff were taking. Even though I was being assisted by one gentlemen I was introduced to the other two at the front desk. This was done for everyone that checks in. There was hotel staff in the lobby just to assist with questions and comments. The check in process was quick, effecient and warm. I almost felt like I was checking into a B&B. As I wandered to my room I could not help but take in the commitment to the restoration and the quality of the workmanship throughout the facility. I was overly impressed as I walked into the room. The furnishings were wonderful and it felt like an apartment. The bathroom was very modern with a a walk in shower and a mirror that does not fog. The Caveat - Please remember I do ALL my corporate hotel stays with Hilton so the pictures of the room below are from a suite that I was upgraded to because of status. However, I did have an opportunity to view a standard room as a maid was servicing it and that room had very similar appointments. Cocktail Hour ------------- It was time to head to the Red Piano Lounge. Yes they do have a Red Piano. On this evening a guitar player was strumming and incredible array of music that kept the bar upbeat. The service continued to be Stellar and the prices for cocktails were not unreasonable. Beer: $4.25 avg. Cocktails: $7-10 avg. -------------- The remodel and impeccable service has kept the Skirvin to its heritage and I can say that I have a new hotel to stay at in OKC. |
