Sixaola is a small boarder town in the southeastern part of Provincia de Limon, and as bananas are the cash crop of the area, this is what you will mostly see. The main reason people come to the town is to cross into Panama, especially to get to Bocas del Toro, Panama and the rest of the islands. Like most boarder towns, there isn't much to do. There are some basic and simple accomodations as well as a few sodas (local bars). Outside of the town itself, there is a lush jungle that is great for bird watching.

Sixaola. A true border town - a place you have to go to but wouldn´t normally choose to visit. It´s dusty, watchful and transitory. Costarricenes and Panamanians seem free to come and go as they please: Residents of Panama carry bags across the bridge for Westerners, whereas a seemingly constant procession of school children pass betweent he countries. Border patrol-men with sub-machine guns don´t seem to phase the locals too much. Indeed, they didn´t phase me too ...

My plan had originally been to take the 6:30am bus but I was undecided as to whether I wanted to watch some more of Cliff's videos. In the end I thought it best to move on though and got a ticket on the 10:30am bus to the border. The border crossing was pretty easy. I didn't even have to pay any exit tax in Costa Rica nor get a tourist card in Panama due to my German passport (US and British citizens seem to need them though). I hope this doesn't come back to bite me later but I double checked...

A dirty hot reasonably uneventful boarder crossing, but with a very interesting, dilapidated bridge shared by the trucks and foot traffic to and from Costa Rica/Panama.
