This very old city is situated on the banks of Lake Lucerne and has beautiful mountains within easy visibility.
Very well known for the Chapel Bridge which was originally built in 1333 it is also home to the Lion Monument in a park just off Lowenplatz. The monument was created by Bertel Thorvaldsen to honor the more than 700 Swiss Guards who were massacred in the 1792 French revolution in Paris. It is a very detailed carving of a dying lion in the rock. There are still portions of the wall which once surrounded the city and all eight of the tall watch towers. Our stay in the city was at the Grand Hotel Europe, a satisfactory hotel about a mile from old town. Our dinner was at a fine Italian Restaurant. Touristy, yes, but a wonderful city full of beautiful architecture and sights. Part of the Spring 2005 travel blog |

So that was about it for the sites in Lucerne. We bought some souveniers including a Swiss Army Knife! Then we headed to the grocery store in the train station to get some food for dinner later that night and for the next couple days. We didn't do much that night… Arriving to our actual Swiss destination |

I took a walk over to the lake and spent some time there, taking photos of the sites. My next stop was the two covered bridges in town, which have a lot of history dating back to medieval times. I believe both bridges at one time caught fire, but they have been restored. I also took a walk up on the remaining… Arrival in Switzerland |

But I do know that either on foot or through the bus window, we saw many of the great sites in Paris. I hope my photos help to tell some of the story. Later: We have arrived in Switzerland, our third European country. I think we are about 30 minutes away from our hotel in Lucern. I see snow-capped mountains off in the distance… Paris to Lucerne |
