Simbok Sayur (Veggie seller) of Java, Indonesia Reviews
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Dec 27, 2007
In small cities in Java, indonesia, we have ladies (ranging from old, middle aged and younger ones - but recently the population is getting older, since this job doesn't attract younger generation too much) who are going around the houses and sell vegetables.
There are lots of housewives who normally don't go to the market to buy vegetables everyday. So, for day-to-day or in emergency condition, when suddenly run out of garlic or etc, we have them and we called it "Simbok Sayur" (simbok = old lady, sayur = veggie). Amazing to see them carrying all the stuffs in their backs, on top of their heads (literally) and in their hands. They went very early in the morning, before dawn to big market and bought the fresh greens, then start the journey, so they can reach the customer before lunch time and catch the housewives before they cook. They carry 1 (sometimes 2) big flat tray (javanes: tampah) made of woven bamboo fill them with stuffs and carry it on top of their head. At their backs they have a bamboo baskets (indonesian: bakul)and tied to the body with a piece of clothes (javanese: jarit). And I really checked to peek her head before she put the tray on, and the hair was still thick and healthy! Amazing! Part of the Purwokerto - end of year vacation 2007 travel blog |
