Silver Spring Overview

Though Silver Spring is a large suburban city, its downtown area is moderately sized and lies directly to the north of Washington, D. C. A decade ago this area was dilapidated, but in the past seven years Silver Spring has left its unflattering past far behind, and through a dedicated revitalization effort has become a popular destination for visitors. The downtown area is very walkable and its restaurants draw visitors from as far away as Virginia. In the summer it features concerts and a Saturday farmer’s market and craft fair. It also has good elevated train service to Washington, D. C. (www.wmata.com) and as of July 2011 the city is constructing a new elevated train and bus station.

Downtown Silver Spring is also home to many businesses, and most prominent among these is Discovery Communications, which produces such well-known channels as TLC, Animal Planet, OWN, and the Military Channel.
