Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) - Paradise Fossil Plant Mar 25, 2010
Tours used to be common in this massive plant, but they have stopped them. That still doesn't mean you can't go see one of the largest Power Plants in the world and see the land John Prine sang about in his Folk song "Paradise". I would highly recommend having a local travel brochure with you, but it's not needed. The power plant was built on land that sits about a mile south of where the old village of Paradise, KY once sat. John Prine sang about its demise in his song "Paradise". The Peabody Mine (The Sinclair Surface Mine) is long gone, but back in behind the power plant is the "World's Largest Shovel" still to this day, buried under 400 feet of dirt and rock. The power plant is a massive complex and usually you can find a good place to pull off and snag a picture of it. But, it being one of the largest in the world is reason enough to see the place in all its glory!! Have fun, but don't do anything that would get you in trouble. TVA Police do patrol the grounds and keep an eye out for suspicious people. Along the way to the plant, you'll pass through once strip mined land that has now become part of the Peabody Wildlife Refuge and still see some of the massive haul roads feeding the old mines.
