Hi everyone! Well, this is the last entry in our journal of this trip. We all knew that the time had to come sooner or later. After spending the last 10 days in Cambodia I must say that it was quite interesting and fascinating as well. After we spent a few days in the capital Phnom Penh, staying at different guesthouses, seeing the Genocide Museum where thousands of people were killed by the Khmer Rouge Regime, and spending time at the Killing Fields where one of the biggest massac...

Cambodia is amazing and inspiring. The temples are beautiful and so are the people. The children are the sweetest and unforgetable.   When I was there I went to a cello concert fundraiser by a Kantha Bopha Foundation. Dr. Beat Richner is a doctor from Switzerland that has raised money and opened three free hospitals for Cambodians. He spends all his time there and saves 2,800 children a year and gives them vaccines and education on how to stay healthy.  His website is http:...

2007 four-week vacation to explore a part of the world that I've dreamed about visiting since I was a child. More importantly, it's the first trip that I had to entirely finance on my own - I feel like such an old person!

The 14 hour bus ride from Saigon to Siem Reap was a real long one, though it wasn't that triring compared to an 8 hour bus ride here in the Philippines and I think the main contributing factor is that Cambodia really has a flat landscape; you can barely see trees or mountains and the road starting from the Viet-Cambo border is mainly a straight one--no sharp turns nor zig-zags like the one we have in our Bicol route (bituka ng manok). So if you fall asleep in the bus you can basically have a ...

Adding Siem Reap as a stop on my mini-vacation in Asia was one of the best decisions I ever made.  I flew in from KL on Air Asia, and thought I was going to have trouble.  Turns out I couldn't find my passport photos needed for the entry visa.  Difficult 15 mninutes searching through my carry-on before I finally found them hidden in my laptop bag. Whew!  Paid my entry fee, collected my bag and some local currency, and was met by the tuk tuk driver arranged by my hotel.&n...

Second Times a Charm

Having been to Siem Reap and Angkor Wat back in 2002, my only reason to go there this time was to stop for a few days en route to Phnom Penh.  After a brutal 14 hours on a miriad of buses, I arrived to a Siem Reap that was more modern and developed than the one I visited 6 years ago.   For those of you who don't know, Siem Reap is the gateway to Angkor Wat, one of the world's 7 wonders.  The town itself is charming and the people are still friendly, although mass tourism d...
