Quick day trip to Valparaiso May 13, 2012
For a short trip to Santiago in March 2012, we had looked up what there was to do and ended up taking the Tur-bus out to Valparaiso for about $12 round trip (for a two-hour ride).

Once we arrived, we signed up for a tour for the day that was to cover the city in a few hours. About 4 people had signed up for the tour ahead of us, so we had to take a cab to meet them up on a large hill and took a funicular up a steep incline to meet them. The tour took us over the city via walking and a small van and we ended up near the sealions.

After the end of the tour, we had time to kill and walked along the beach. We ended up inside of what we thought was an abandoned train, but it was a snack shop/museum/hang-out spot. We walked farther than we thought and it was quite in March as school had just started and it was the end of the tourist season. The sea was cold and although we stuck our toes in the water, that was it. We kept our bathing suits in our backpacks and as other reviews had reported, it's not the most beautiful beach, but it was a beach.

It's an affordable bus ride out there from Santiago that Congress has to take every day for 2 hours in each direction. The city is a little hard to navigate of you want to just walk around, so a tour was a good idea. We were sucked in by one of the tour companies right inside of the bus terminal, but we ended up deciding on a cheaper option that had all the same sites.

Using the restroom on the bus was a slight adventure. As you lock the door, the light will come on and I didn't realize that the first time. In frustration over looking for the light and in fear that the door would spring open while I was in mid-stream, I held the door with one foot and peed in the dark. Also, as a general tip, carry your own toilet paper and germicide gel.

Beautiful side trip May 25, 2011
Visitors to Santiago, Chile should consider visiting Valparaiso. It is accessible by bus and takes about 2 hours to get to. Then city is situated on ahill with many colorful buildings and houses. There is also a intersting cemetary to explore. It is definitely worth staying toe to three days there. Not far from there is the town of Vina del Mar. Has goos beaches and excellent wine.

Santiago Side Trip Dec 09, 2009
On a recent business trip to Santiago, I had 3 meetings in the greater Valparaiso region as most of their naval forces are headquartered there. Valparaiso is a relatively short drive (1.5 hours), but goes fairly quickly as the entire ride is a scenic tour though wine country. Unfortunately, the weather was overcast and rainy, but I was still able to see the beauty and South American charm of this middle-sized Pacific coast town. Valparaiso reminded me of San Francisco topographically due to its steep hills and charming architecture, not only in commercial and government buildings, but also the multi-colored private residences that seem to be stacked atop of each other on the hill-sides. The inner harbor is busy with naval and commercial activity, but a short drive north will bring you to Vina del Mar, a more typical beach resort town. Cluttered with old building and good restaurants, Valparaiso is a highly recommended side trip should your travels bring you to Santiago, Chile.
