Sichuan Province, situated in the southwest of mainland China, has a long history dating back to 4500 BC, when the social and cultural exchange centre of the ancient Shu Kingdom was established. The discovery last century of the lost Sanxingdui site at Guanghan, about forty kilometres from the provincial capital Chengdu, is recognized as the most important archaeological find of Sichuan relics.
The Sichuan-Tibet highway acts as a shortcut in and out of neighbouring Tibet. It had been the lifeline of material supply for Tibet prior to the construction of the Qinghai - Tibet railway. With a well-developed traffic network on land and in the air, Chengdu has long been an important inland transfer station. Shuangliu International Airport is seated in the central section of Shuanxi Plain; sixteen kilometres southwest of downtown Chengdu. Located at 30°34’47” N and 103°57’02’’E, the airport caters not only for domestic movement. The ever-increasing international flight destinations include Cambodia, Japan, Singapore, The Netherlands, and Thailand.

People i met here, who contributed to and improved my trip: Juliana (Russia), Russell (England)
So the main reason of going to Chengdu was to visit the Panda research base.... a must for any lover of wldlife, or soft cuddly things! We set off at 7am accompanied by an English guy called Russell and were the first people admitted. This was perfect, as we got to see the Pandas just waking from their slumber and ready to tuck into their daily 40kg of bamboo!
We walked around each of the enclosu...

I was fortunate enough to be able to fulfill an ambition of mine to see a real live panda, and preferably in China. I was visiting Shanghai on a work trip for two weeks so decided to make a weekend trip to Chengdu - specifically to visit the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding. Originally I had read many things about the Wolong Panda Reserve, being in the panda's natural environment, I really wanted to try and visit here. This place was however a five-six hour road...

Like the title says, we didn't think much of the city. We had to race across town from the train station to the bus station for the express to Chongqing. While in Xi'an a guy tried to pick pocket Laura's handbag and it was only that I realised he'd definitely followed us into the underpass that I was checking back when I saw him trying to open the zip. So we were both being really careful with our stuff.
Chengdu isn't an easy city to get around. The train journey was fine - not too long as I...

I arrived in Chengdu this morning after a 36-hour-long train ride that I thought was going to take 10. Somehow when I asked what time the train would arrive, I assumed the information leady meant 5:45 am the next morning, and not 5:45 am the morning after! If I'd thought about it at all, it should've been really obvious. Chengdu is pretty much on the opposite side of China from Hangzhou, and the super fast train from Beijing to Shanghai already takes 12 hours.
The funny thing is I didn't eve...
