Sibolga Vacation Guide

Sibolga is the largest town on the west coast of North Sumatra province. It is a lengthy and often strenuous drive from any of the provincial capitals in the area (Medan, Padang, Banda Aceh) but holds some popularity with domestic tourists in this region of Sumatra.

The town is stretched between the Indian Ocean and the Bukit Barisan Mountains, which offer stunning sunset views of the town the the coastal area. Past discussion has included developing a monorail along the mountianside to increase tourism but other infrastructure projects took higher priority in the aftermath of the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake an resulting tsunami which caused some damage to the town.

Sibolga is primarily known, however, as a transit point for ferries out to Pulau Nias and and Simiulue islands. Pelni ships stop here, and the Indonesian military has a strong presence in the town as well.
