Sibelius Monument is made by Eila Hiltunen and it's one of the Helsinki's most popular sights. Finnish people thought that this monument was too abstract, so they demanded that Eila Hiltunen adds also Jean Sibelius's faces as well somewhere.

It's so big, that you can go "inside" of it and watch the inside pipes as well. And usually kids go there and screams to this pipes. Maybe you can try it as well.

And the nice way back to the city centre is to walk down to the sea coast. There's lots of parks and couple cafe/bar where you can sit and enjoy the sea and cold drinks.

This is something that generally people love or hate.CFD's review would seem to belong in the latter category - I think it's great. It's lucky we don't all like the same things.

Finland comes high in the musical world these days with a host of gifted conductors but Sibelius was something else and it should come as no surprise that there was a major competition to design a memorial. The competition was won by Eila Hiltonen and the memorial was unveiled in 1967 but a bust of Sibelius to the side was added to the original pipes because of an argument about abstract art.

Apparently the monument weighs 24 tons and consists of over 600 hollow steel pipes welded together. I had heard that it was based on organ pipes but this seemed strange as Sibelius was not a composer of organ music. The iea contained on that the wave-like shape is meant to capture the essence of his music.
