Si Phan Don Vacation Guide
Si Phan Don is a series of small islands on the Mekong River in Laos. The islands are right before the Cambodian border. This area is also referred to as the 4,000 islands but it is said during the rainy season there are only 2,000.
During the French occupation a railway was built on these islands along with a handful of now dilapidated colonial buildings and several piers. From the islands you can see some nice (but shallow) waterfalls.
The islands are known for being laid back and relaxed. Although there are tourists amenities expect everything to work at a slower pace and in some places plan for limited electricity.
From here you can go overland into Cambodia. Curiously there are two borders. At the time I crossed one required pre-arranged visas, the one a little more out of the way issued visas on arrival.

My first time start-to-end backpacking trip and my first time in a tropical country... and it was great! We first took a boat up north to a fishing village and then went down to beautiful Luang Prabang, next to partytown Vang Vieng and finally to Vientiane. The overnight bus brought us to Pakse with an impressive two day jungle treck through Xe Pian NPA. After a stay at the 4000 islands we crossed the border to Phnom Penh and the temples of Angkor and went back from Saigon.
