Shuyuan International Hostel Xi'an Reviews
A little bit more expensive but worth it..... Aug 18, 2009
Stayed here from 21/08/09 - 25/08/09 and have nothing but positive things to say.
All Chinese staff but all spoke good English & were ready to help in any way they could to make your stay & your trip to Xi'an more enjoyable.
Beautiful settings in a sort of Chinese courtyard - just off the main road although you wouldn't know as it so quiet once you are inside.
6 bed dorms or private rooms available - private rooms have en suite bathrooms whilst dorms share recently renovated communal bathrooms.
Hostel situated just off South Road in Xi'an, 30 seconds walk from South Gate (hire a bike & cycle the city walls) & a number of useful bus stops.
Paid approx 300 yuan for 4 nights (2 people, private room) - whilst this is more expensive than a number of other hostels in Xi'an, the surroundings, the location, the standard of accomodation, the "cafe" (has a number of chefs preparing chinese & western dishes) & the underground bar make it a (small) price worth paying.
Cynophobics (dog-phobics) beware, the hostel boasts at least 2 very friendly dogs who randomly roam about - one largeish & one tiny little puppy - both very quiet & very tame.
There is a free internet cafe with broadband access & the hostel arrange a number of tours to sights in Xi'an & the surrounding areas for very reasonable rates.
As I said at the start of the review - I cannot recommend this hostel enough - 4 out of 5 (only because it is more expensive than a number of other hostels in the area).

Decent Spot in Xi'an Nov 08, 2009
Shuyuan in Xi'an is a pretty standard, decent spot. Nothing out of this world, but is lightyears better than the rougher options in China. Not a fan of the squat toilet in the hostel (rather Western where I stay and squat out in public during the day) or the fact that there's never any toilet paper because the one roll supplied daily is far from adequate, but small complaints on the whole. Fantastic place to meet people, really big place and well proportioned, so never cramped or any of that. Enormous bar hidden in the basement beneath; apparently a "hit" spot with the locals. Both bar and cafe are a bit overpriced. Free pickup from the train station and free daily beer (although during inconvenient hours) are nice perks. Overall, good place to stay.
