Shosei-en Garden (Kikoku-tei) Kyoto Reviews
Beautiful zen garden in Kyoto Oct 01, 2008
The Shosei-en Garden is a zen garden and it's part of the Higashi Honjanji Temple. I'm a huge fan of japanese gardens, so this was one garden I wanted to visit during my 3rd time in Kyoto.
As it was a really nice & sunny day and not many people around, I could wander around and enjoy the space and quietness of the garden.
For a price of 500 yen (around 4,50 euros or around 6 US dollars), you get entrance to a really beautiful garden. The free map had a route I followed. Of course people could always choose their own path.
The garden has several buildings, that were once studios and tea houses as well as a chinese corridor-style bridge, 2 ponds (a small one that is connected through a small stream with a big pond). Plenty of koi carps swim in the big pond, which also has an island. And of course there are the various gardens.
These gardens mainly consist of rocks, grass and trees/bushes. These are in my opinion what makes a garden really beautiful. Obviously in the spring time, there will be flowers present, as well as the cherry blossom. But at the start of autumn, the colours were pretty much gone.
For a small amount of money, I got to enjoy a great walk and time in a beautiful surrounding, so this garden is in my opinion a must see if you are planning to visit Kyoto!
