As part of the "Short Bike Rides" book series, "Short Bike Rides: Long Island" by Phillip Angelillo is a great buy. For not that much money, you can get this soft cover that's small enough to fit it any backpack.

What's great about the way this book is set up, is that you can look up a specific town, and it'll show you a map, with different routes laid out. Ratings are given for the difficulty of each route (hills, etc.), length of each route, etc. The maps are very clear and simple to follow.
