Highly recommended Architecture River Cruise Sep 23, 2012
Shoreline Sightseeing offers various types of boat tours on Chicago River as well as on Lake Michigan, with moderate to high price range. This particular review is for their 60 minute Architecture River Cruise ride that I took twice in past few years. It’s an excellent way to see the beautiful skyline of Chicago and know the history and behind-the-scene-stories of the world famous architectures in the city.

The trip costs about $32 which is not very cheap but it’s well worth the experience you get in return. It is advised to book the weekend tours beforehand since they are filled up very quickly. The boat starts near Navy Pier entrance and cruises through Chicago River that has beautiful buildings with unique features and rich history. There are chairs for the passengers to sit in the open air and you are not allowed to stand while the boat is moving except for going to toilet, of course! A knowledgeable guide with microphone (and a good sense of humor) narrates the history and keeps you smiling/laughing throughout the tour.

Don’t forget to put on sunscreen or sunglasses if you are taking the tour on a sunny day. There is no shade on the deck where people sit. Shoreline also takes pictures of the passengers before boarding and offers them for a hefty $20/piece which you can ignore.

The staffs were very professional and courteous. I had a guest whose flight was cancelled and he reached almost at the time when we were about to board for the tour. We called them ahead and asked for their advice for this messy situation. They said it’s ok to if we can’t reach on time for our scheduled trip, we can use the same tickets for the next one. I was impressed with their generosity! After taking this tour twice I would highly recommend this to anyone who is coming to see the City of Chicago.

Revisiting the history through a boat tour Aug 10, 2011
Shoreline Sightseeing company operates many sight seeing tours in Chicago. One of them is Architectural boat tour. Priced at 29USD +Tax this tour is one of its kind in the travel world.

This open boat tour begins at Navy pier and takes a round in Chicago river. Guide will explain the importance of all architectural sky scrappers on the river side. Expecially the tallest building, SEARS tower, John Hancock observatory. Old post office, New post office, Trump building, Stock exchange, Hardrock cafe etc..

Guide will explain the date, time taken for construction, space for the business, architect designed and the owner of the building. Guide will also take us through the memory of Chicago fire and lives lost in the fire through her orator skills. We can take the skyline pics in 2 spots where the boat turns in this tour.

Nice to know the history of most of these sky scrappers before roaming in the place in the evening.

The cram session of Chicago touristing Jul 25, 2010
There are a bunch of companies that run this. I wanted to try one thru the architectural foundation, but I was running out of time so I just went straight to Navy Pier and hoped for the best. The tour was a great way to see a ton of the city in one hour. It was entertaining and informative. You learn about the names, architects, styles, and functions of about 50 or so different buildings that can be seen from the Chicago River. You also get some tid bits of the city's history mixed in. It's great if you're short on time and want to get an audit of all there is to see in the city. $30 bucks seems a bit steep considering that it lasts an hour, but you can't cover nearly as much by foot, and you wouldn't get a good view up close. Most definitely recommended.
