Shopping galore Jun 11, 2008
Shatin is home to vast middle-class and aspirational shopping malls. The KCR station opens out onto the most expensive part of the mall. Large, modern, multi-floor, interconnected buildings house everything from trendy to deluxe shops--jewellery, clothes, food, electronics, restaurants, chain shops, boutiques. The food court in the basement of each building has cafes and restaurants for Thai, Chinese, Malaysian, Italian, dessert specialists, and so on. These are real restaurants with real food; not just fast food junk outlets. It's really busy on HK holidays and must go wild during the Chinese new year sales, but on a weekday it's not too crowded. Shops open around 10 and stay open till 10. The goods are generally high quality and the service is attentive in most shops. Like other Asian malls, floors tend to be dedicated to shops selling similar goods. Level 7 of the main building is restaurants, but there is a good CD/DVD shop also. Level 6 was electronics outlets. Level 5 was sportswear and sporting goods, and so on. There are generally not many European faces around--this is where middle Hong Kong goes to fulfill its materialist desires. I contributed--arrived with a half-empty suitcase and went home with a full one.

If you want to buy something in Hong Kong you will find it on Nathan Road. If it is not there then you will find it at Yau Ma Tei. Now, if you haven’t found it yet, it doesn’t exist. Nathan Road starts at the harbor and ends at? I’m not sure, I only went as far as Yau Ma Tei. Nathan road is lined with shops and malls selling everything. Yau Ma Tei is the largest outdoor market in Hong Kong. You can find knock off anything. I bought some good-looking Louis Vuitton bags as gifts. Outdoor street food here is found on Temple Street. They have seafood street food and you know what that means. Only the experienced should apply.
