Shopping for food in Amsterdam
Shopping for food in Amsterdam Reviews
Tricky, but possible Aug 19, 2008
When I was in Amsterdam, I really had problems finding a normal grocery store. I needed one for the normal in between snacks and things, because Amsterdam is really expensive when it comes to Restaurants and eating at BurgerKing, MacDonalds and the like gets frustrating.
What I discovered were the little shops in the living-areas have strange closing and opening times, even though they do have the basic needs of daily life... a few veggies, bread, milk, toiletries and the like. They are moderately priced. The only problem is, that they have no visible signs and are mostly in the downstairs part of living houses or beneath other shops and hard to discover.
Then there is a chain called Albert Heijn, with a blue ch-looking sign, that are easier to find, but in my experience had a limited number of things... a lot like the downstairs grocery stores. Especially the ones close to Dam had a lot of Ready-made food... for singles and business-people obviously.
Where I mostly shopped, was at the Supermarket behind the Dam. I don't know the name anymore, but I think it was Heijn too... its big, its modern and it has every type of food one could want... Salads, Breads, Chocolates, Yoghurts. I love to see what type of Chips a country offers, and they had a large number of those too. Its on the left side behind the Dam (The Dome) on Dam Square, and in the way of other shopping.
