Shingwedzi Restcamp Reviews
Shingwedzi Rest Camp Jun 01, 2009
There are several big rest camps around Kruger National Park but most of them are in the southern part of the park. Up in the north are only a few big camps. One of the camps up north is the Shingwedzi camp. It is a bit campsite where you can get many different kinds of different accommodation - ranging from tent camping to big cottages for several people. Only the top end off the market is unavailable inside the camps in Kruger. The cheaper options are with shared toilets and showers whereas the more expensive options got private showers and toilets. None of the rooms got television - hence you don’t see any flashing lights from the rooms with people watching tely during the night.
The Shingwedzi camp is equipped with all you need for a stay in the park. There is a gas station, restaurant and a small shop. The supply in the shop is somewhat limited considering there is almost 150 kilometers from the campsite to the closest gate of the park. Considering there is only one restaurant in the camp and there is nowhere else you can go it is actually pretty good and prices are reasonable. You can go on tours arranged by the ranger in the camp if you like otherwise you can just go by yourself when the gates to the camp site are opened in the morning.
One special feature is the big swimming pool at the camp which you can use if you like. But it looked a bit closed during the winter - or maybe I just did not get by it during opening hours.
The location of the park is excellent right at the Shingwedzi River with lots of wildlife all around. During the evening you might be lucky to spot hippos or elephants walking past the restaurant. The camp is a perfect location for exploring the northern parts of Kruger National Park which is by far the less visited part of the park hence you will have more exclusive wildlife watching up here.
You can go camping without reservation at least during off peak times of the year. But if you need accommodation you should go to sanparks homepage and make reservation ahead of time.
