Shimuwini Bushveld Camp Kruger National Park Reviews
Affordable & Close to Nature Dec 16, 2010
My best friend got married in December of 2010 and the wedding was held in the Kruger National Park. Personally, I can’t think of a better place to get married!!! As it was a small wedding, only 50 people, they booked the whole Shimuwini Bushveld Camp for the weekend.
It is a self-catering camp situated on the banks of the Letaba River in the northern part of the Kruger. It cost about €50 per person per night, and conservation fees of €4.50 per day for South Africans, and €18.00 for foreigners, children under 12 pays half price. I have NO idea why it is so expensive for other nationalities... not fair, is it?
Back to the camp, it is very basic, quite old and I would say in need of a facelift. They have solar panels for heat and lights, gas stoves & fridges. Each chalet has braai (bbq) facilities and a nice veranda overlooking the Letaba River. Easy to spot hippos & crocodiles while having a nice glass of wine.
Only 1 or 2 of the chalets had a plug where batteries for cameras & cell phones could be charged. As we had the whole camp to ourselves, this didn’t cause any problems; everyone knew everyone and we all shared this plug. Think it would be extremely inconvenient should you not have the camp to yourself. Car chargers are a definite must!!! Cell phone reception is also very poor at the camp, so don’t expect to keep in touch with family and friends elsewhere.
The camp also has a swimming pool & lapa (communal bbq area). For the wedding reception the Shimuwini Camp supplied the food for the night, set the tables and had cleaning staff available. The guides, management and general staff very friendly, very helpful and made this special day for my friend an exceptional one.
Recommendation? YES!! I love Kruger, I love this camp, and even though it’s old, its intimate, private and you are close to nature, which I guess is the whole point of going there!!
