Shimokitazawa Tokyo Reviews

Hidden Gem Oct 24, 2010
Visited here to watch a friends band play at a live house (that's a venue, gig or show to the rest of us) and was pleased to find this little gem.

The lack of skyscrapers and usual array of Tokyo's neon frenzy is quite refreshing.

With a labyrinth of intricate streets and alleyways all holding something interesting. With vintage clothing stores, live music clubs and great value cafe's and restaurants, Shimokitazawa remind's me of Camden market in London.

It has a community feel to the place which again seems lacking in many parts of Tokyo.

The area does attract a younger crowd with many students and young white collar workers exporing the shops, theatre and live music here.

The chance to spend an afternoon or early evening browsing through the bookshops and thriftstores and maybe go to watch some of the cooler artists perform in the evening is a highly recommended experience.

There are plans for a contravertial highway to be built through the centre of this community with mixed feelings. The elder generation tending to favour the modernisation and the younger wanting to maintain the character and charm on the town. The road does seem inevitable though so catch it at it's best now.

It takes about 15 minutes from Shinjuku Station.

Catch the Odakyu (private company)line to Shimokitazawa

Be sure to check out Shimokitazawa. This is a district of Tokyo popular with college-age students and twenty somethings. The area has a very Berkeley-esque funk to it, and it's got tons of stores to bum around in. Basically, it's a lot of little shops surrounding the JR station. While you will see tourists around, it's definitely more off the beaten track than the more well known places (Shibuya, Shinjuku, etc.) If you're looking for a cool place to hang out for an afternoon, check it out.
