Sheviningen is the beach near Den Haag, which is a two-strip tram ride from the city centre. There is a wide, sandy beach (apparently there is a nudist beach a mile North - I went in November. You'd need very tough nudists!). There are some nice statues, including a rather fun one of a giant man eating a herring. There is also a sealife centre, the usual compliment of gift shops, a small mall and some cafés. The beach looked clean, apart from some storm flotsam, and it was November so you can't blame them for that. The sand is fine and in summer it looks like they don't allow dogs.
The pier is rather classier than the British ones, with a bungee tower but no fairground, at least not in November. There is also a casino, a restaurant, a couple of cafés and a pancake house. For me, though, it was simpler pleasures that caught my attention. The De Jong Snack stall further along the beach serves some of the best chips (fries/ frites - but the fat kind) I have ever had. Fluffy in the middle, crispy on the outside, and served with a kind of reddish seasoning that I suspect contained paprika and a great big dollop of sauce. It beats the incipid commercial cardboard served in the incomprehensively popular chains (Mannekin Pis, Utrecht - this means you I'm afraid!) into a cooling pulp. There are few things to compare with good chips on a winter seafront, and these were really, really good chips. Part of the Utrecht 2007 travel blog |
