Business Card of Lviv Sep 27, 2017
"Business Card of Lviv" - this is how they often call this street - Shevchenko Avenue located downtown.

It leads from Mikhail Hrushevsky monument to Adam Mickiewicz Square. It is one of the two avenues in Lviv. Also, it is one of the oldest city streets. It was first mentioned in the chronicle of 1414. This street was one of the streets of the Galician suburbs where leathersmiths and navvies used to live. Therefore, until the beginning of the 19th century, this street was called Leathersmiths Street.

Later, it was called St.John Nepomucký Street. In 1871, it was named Academic Street since it led to the university campus. In 1955, Academic Street was renamed into Shevchenko Avenue. Each building in Shevchenko Avenue has its own architectural value. In particular, the building of the former Halych Mortgage Bank (No. 1), a hotel that once belonged to George Hoffman (at present: George Hotel, No. 2), the house of Stogel (now - Lviv Institute of Banking, No. 8), the house of Romuald Turasevicz with sculptures of Atlant and Caryatid (No. 26). House No. 17/19 is the building of the Lviv Stock Exchange. The impressive building is the creation of the outstanding Lviv architect Arnold Zakharevich. It is marked by monumentality and a beautiful decoration of the facade. At the top on the pediment you will notice a mosaic coat of arms of Lviv. The original house No. 27 on the corner with the Fredr Street and Herzen Street was built in 1909 under the influence of late English Art Nouveau.

There is a maple boulevard in the middle of this avenue. Seven streets begin from the end of Shevchenko Avenue.

I enjoyed viewing the architecture there: very unusual and splendid apartment houses. Shevchenko Avenue is full of unique architectural masterpieces. Each building is attractive here and can be called a page of history. The Prosecutor’s Office looks grand too!

Mykhailo Hrushevsky monument is located at the end of Shevchenko Avenue. It was dedicated on June 12, 1994. Mykhailo Hrushevsky is known as the President of the Central Council (parliament) of the Ukrainian People’s Republic (the speaker of the parliament) in 1918. Mykhailo Hrushevsky monument was made of bronze and granite and was dedicated on June 12, 1994. Mykhailo Hrushevsky is known as an image on the 50 hryvnia bill and as the President of the Ukrainian People’s Republic. However, the Ukrainian People’s Republic had no President. Hrushevsky was the President of the Central Council (parliament) of the Ukrainian People’s Republic (the speaker of the parliament). Also, he was a professor of history, an outstanding scientist, an academician, a political and public figure, the author of over 2,000 scientific works.

Here is a great Panorama of the Monument : http://grushevkyj-monument-lviv.virtual.ua/ua/

There is a new impressive edifice in Shevchenko Avenue: Atlas Hotel, located opposite Mykhailo Hrushevsky monument.

There is great store in this avenue: Svitoch – the company store of the local confectionery company known all over Ukraine.

In addition, there is a big bookstore here. It is at 8 Shevchenko Avenue. The bookstore belongs to Shevchenko Scientific Society. Another bookstore is nearby at 14 Shevchenko Avenue. It is called Book Lion Supermarket. http://www.booklion.lviv.ua/
