There is an annual celebration on January 27th. It is called "Up Helly Aa" (The End of the Holy Days). It is a night of whisky drinking, singing, and dancing. "Squads" of "guizers" (men wearing a "disguise" of Viking helmets, armor, and clothing) are deployed to build a Norse longboat, who, after parading it through town and launching it into the harbor, eventually toss their burning torches into the specially-made Viking ship.
