Shenandoah Summer Music Theatre Winchester Reviews
Music Theatre in the Shenandoah Valley Aug 02, 2008
Shenandoah Summer Music Theatre (SSMT) brings professionally staged Broadway musicals to Virginia's Shenandoah valley every summer. In 2008, SSMT celebrated its 25th anniversary season. Four shows are produced every summer, ranging from Broadway classics like Show Boat and Oklahoma! to contemporary shows like Legally Blonde. (SSMT is usually one of the first summer stock companies to secure the rights to perform newer Broadway musicals.) Professional musical theatre performs take leading roles complimented by recent graduates and students from Shenandoah Conservatory and other college theatre programs. (Performance and technical internships are available to university theatre students.)
In 2008, SSMT presented Singin' in the Rain, Fiddler on the Roof, Jesus Christ Superstar, and The Producers. We saw The Producers, the Mel Brooks comedy based on his movie (and later made into its own movie). I thoroughly enjoyed SSMT's production. (It compared very favorably with the national tour produciton we'd seen in Washington.) A highlight of 2011 was Elton John's Aida.
Tickets range from $24 to $27, very reasonable compared with ticket prices on Broadway or theatres in Washington, DC. (You can see the whole summer season for less than the price of one show at the Kennedy Center.) Winchester is easy to reach from Washington (90 minute drive) and all of Northern Virginia. Performances take place at the Ohrstrom-Bryant Theatre on the campus of Shenandoah Unviersity.
