Overpriced and poor accomodations Feb 15, 2011
Stayed in cabins in January. They were horrible. First cabin did not have heat and fireplace did not work. Front desk was not much help. Finally after several calls they moved us to an "upgraded, just remodeled" cabin. It had holes in the doors. Very outdated accomodations that need a lot of repair. Poor value.

Quiet Family Getaway Jul 20, 2008
Located in the Appalachian foothills near the banks of the Ohio River, you will find Shawnee State Park. A wonderful getaway suitable for families and people just looking for a quiet place to connect with nature is the Lodge and Conference Center. Surrounded by the Shawnee State Forest, once the hunting grounds of the Shawnee Indians, these accommodations are a beautiful gem of the Ohio State Park system.

The lodge has 50 double rooms and has a breathtaking view of the surrounding hill country. These rooms have double beds (brand new while we were there), a scenic balcony, access to many facilities, and a first class dining room. There are many meeting rooms suitable for small to medium sized groups. The lobby is spacious and contains furniture made by local crafters. TV, fireplaces, a small gift shop, tables, chairs, and a very large deck overlooking the pool can all be accessed from the lobby. There is even a computer center to keep abreast of the latest on TravBuddy!

Family activities abound! There are two swimming pools (one inside and one outside), shuffleboard courts, putting green, game room, tennis, basketball, sauna, jacuzzi, and easy access to hiking trails. Located within the State Park is a championship 18 hole golf course with a view of the Ohio River. Next to the golf course is the marina with boat launch ramps and transient dock rental. Two lakes, Turkey Creek Lake and Roosevelt Lake, allow only electric motors and are great for fishing and offer canoes, rowboats, and paddle boats for rent. Daytime activities include nature hiking trails, bridle trails, backpack trails, picnicking, beach area, archery, and nature programs. During the winter-weather permitting, ice fishing is available on the lakes.

The dining room features floor to ceiling windows overlooking the valley below. The menu offers anything from sandwiches to full course dinners. You can enjoy your favorite wine or beveridge from the bar. There is a nice childrens menu, and the service is great. The bar is open for drinks throughout the late afternoon and evening. Different dinner specials run nightly as does the "drink of the day." While we were there, an all you can eat spaghetti dinner was featured at $13.99.

Does this sound like a great getaway? It is! And so much more! Just take State Route 52 west of Portsmouth, then follow scenic State Route 125 until you see the sign for Shawnee State Park Lodge. This is a truly beautiful, quiet place to unwind from the daily routine!
