Camping in one of Ohio's State Parks Jul 28, 2008
Shawnee State Park, just west of Portsmouth, Ohio, offers so many accommodations with the campground providing camper and tent sites. There are 6 non-electric sites, 101 sites with electric, and two rent-a-camp facilities. A small camp store is located within the office, and bundles of dried firewood and fire starters are available for purchase.

On our visit to the campground, the lady in the office was very nice and helpful. She was knowledgable of the area, and was able to answer all our questions.

Tent camping is one of the most popular. There are plenty of big trees offering an abundance of shade. Some spots would have been hard to park a camper of a larger size. There were picnic tables and plenty of space to spread a couple tents and canopies.

The two rent-a-camp facilities looked fairly new. These could be seen upon entering the parking lot leading to the entrance. The small cabins could be reserved with basic camping gear provided.

The restrooms had flush toilets, pretty nice showers, and laundry facilities. Pets are permitted, and a dump station is onsite for your convenience. The brochure states that a group camp of 25 is available for reservation. Bicycles and boats can be rented for your enjoyment. Registered campers can also "borrow" sports equipment and games.

There are many things to do in and around Shawnee State Park and Shawnee State Forest. Many hiking trails are available from short trips to day backpacking trips. Fishing is allowed in Turkey Creek and Roosevelt Lake. Electric motor boats provide anglers with quiet spots to fish. The Ohio River is only minutes from the campground and offers a marina and boat launches. There is unlimited horsepower on the river. There are many bridle trails and horseman camping sites. There used to be a mini golf course near the campstore, but it was overgrown and had not had care recently.

For a quiet getaway, try the beautiful, quiet Shawnee State Park campground surrounded by the nature of southern Ohio!

Is this also part of the Shawnee National Forest that stretches into IL?
