Shawnee State Park Family Cottages (Cabins) - Something for the Whole Family! Jul 20, 2008
Don't want to stay at the Lodge? Shawnee State Park offers family alternate lodging - Cabins! Within easy walking distance to the lodge, are 25 Air Conditioned Family Cottages (Cabins). These are handicapped accessible, modern, and clean. Each cabin has two bedrooms with accommodations for seven (more if you take cots), a kitchen and living area, a nice sized bathroom, a screened in deck, and a small covered front porch. Each cabin has parking just outside the cabin for two vehicles.
A very nice feature to these cabins is the accessbility to all the lodge amendities! The two swimming pools, tennis court, playground area, archery, trails, dining room, sauna, jacuzzi, computer center, shuffleboard, and game room are all within easy walking distance. Each cabin has an outside grill, and can access the fire ring located in the center of the cabin area.
The surrounding area around the cabins is very quiet! After 10:00 pm, all campers are asked to respect their fellow campers by quieting down. In our case, we would put the young children to bed, and play cards on the screened in deck off the rear of the building. The cabins are very quiet. Even a thunderstorm during the night was barely heard by our group!
One bedroom has beds for 5 people - one set of bunk beds and another set with a full bed below. The other bedroom had a full bed. Each bedroom has a dresser, nightstands, and plenty of space for gear or in our case, two small cribs. Though the sofa in the living area was not a pull out bed, a couple cots could be set up for additional sleeping. Even the back deck could accommodate a couple cots.
There is a gas fireplace to take the chill off during cooler weather months. We were there in July and possibly one of the hottest few days of the month. The air conditioner worked overtime, but was able to keep the temperature inside a comfortable 72 degrees.
Our cabin had a table seating six people and a picnic table on the screened deck. The kitchen was fully furnished with a full sized refrigerator and stove. Dishes are provided. In the bathroom, there was an ample supply of linens with service once during a week long stay. More linens were available just by asking. All bedding was provided.
We had planned on pitching a tent for something different for the older children, but no tents are allowed in the cabin area. Also, there is a community fire ring surrounded by picnic tables and porch swings. This was a little disappointing, but we made the best of the fire ring for breakfast and dinner.
Campers are asked to recycle, and a center is provided for disposal. Renters are also asked to clean the cabin before leaving. A vacuum, mop, and broom are provided. A cleaning crew will completely service the cabin between renters.
We found the cabin to be just want a family needs! It was very clean, comfortable, and provided 4 adults, 4 children, and 1 dog (Yes, pets are allowed) with a few days of rest and relaxation! I thought the price was reasonable for our stay. There was plenty to do, and we met some very nice people.
For activities, please see the review of the Shawnee State Park Lodge. All lodge amendities are available to cabin occupants. We had no cell phone service while in the State Park. The lodge does offer internet service and WiFi at an additional fee.
Would we stay there again? You bet! What a great way to spend a few days communing with nature!
