Shattuck Down Low Travel Reviews

Jul 13, 2007
For East Bay residents who don't always want to cross the bridge for nightlife, Shattuck Down Low is a great option. It's a fun place for people of all ages who enjoy dancing to hip hop, reggae, and Latin music.

They have events every night of the week except for Mondays. Sunday is reggae night, Tuesday is karaoke, Wednesday is Live Salsa and on Thursdays they have DJs spinning hip hop. On the first Saturday of the month they have BR55, a big Brazilian party with live samba, forro, and axe. On the second Saturday is Angel Magik, a reggae, dancehall, and soca party. On Fridays and other Saturdays, they usually have local and national groups performing or DJs. The schedule is on the website. The cover charge depends on the event- usually it's $5-$15 but sometimes more for bigger acts. There are often discounts for students or for people on the e-mail list who have vouchers.

The club is a good size for the events it holds. Even when it's crowded, there is still enough room to dance. There are tables, chairs and couches that are sometimes reserved, but for local band performances you can usually find plenty of places to sit. They have a water dispenser which is a great thing for a club to have- you don't have to ask the bartender for it or pay for "designer" water bottles.

Of course, being in Berkeley, the crowd is diverse and quirky. There are college students, bohemian types and fun older couples getting down on the dance floor. In general, the vibe is great and everyone is there to have fun!

worldcitizen says: Jupiter is a bar in Berkeley with a great selection of house brews. It's a great place to sit and have a mellow evening at a bar. There is a courtyard with a fireplace with lots of seating and plenty more seating indoors in the two story bar/restaurant. They often have live jazz performances and the...
