1st full day in Egypt
posted by:

This was our last full day in Egypt, and how better to spend it out on the water seeing some of the worlds best coral reefs? We boarded our boat and made it a few hundred years off shore and already we had to police on us wanting to do a passport check. Eventually we were on our way to our first reef. The diver who was to swim with us gave a lecture about the corals and the fish. I already knew many of them as I am a saltwater aquariumist. When we finally landed at our first reef I was one ...

Welcome to Sharm el Sheik. A purpose built holiday resort on the Sinai peninsular in the middle of the desert on the Red Sea and 6 hours drive from Cairo. Sharm is a stunning place to visit. It is a place of extremes. On the one side is the Sinai desert called Sinai due to the triangular shape of the rugged desert mountains. On the other side the Red Sea called such due to the Red Corals and the Red reflection from the desert mountains that occurs certain times of the year.

You can't be bored in Sharm. Although it is a place built only for tourist, there are so many things and occasion to do. There are so many beautiful coral reefs, sun is shining so intensive and tradesmen shout so loud. It is only 15 min to Naama Bay, the shopping district and another 15 min to Old Sharm Market, the real Egiptian street market, where you can buy everything: papiruses, fruits, little cat's and faraon's stautues, musicial instruments, scarfs, perfumes, jewell...

This was a lovely easter break, me, mum, dad and my ex. He and I did the PADI Advanced Open Water diving course with Camel Dive in the town, which was amazing. We got to go out to the wreck of the SS Thistlegorm in the Straits of Gubal in the Northern Red Sea. From www.ssthistlegorm.com: "It is after all a bombsite with highly visible signs of great destruction and loss. It's also a giant underwater museum, a war grave, a unique piece of military history and an opportunity to step into the p...

When our colored canyon tour guide picked us up, we were surprised to see that it was the same guide we had for the Mount Sinai trip (especially as we booked the two trips through different agencies).  Again, we were not disappointed.  We were two of a group of five, which made our tour more interesting as we moved a bit more quickly than other groups so we stopped quite frequently to hear history or trivia about various spots.  We were also shown many spots to climb up...

- Visited the Monastery of St. Catherine.  What's to see: a room filled with the skulls of former monks, THE burning bush (or at least a shrub that grows REALLY REALLY well in the desert), and a well where Moses drank.- The Monks "back in the day" were illiterate and burned the ancient scrolls to stay warm during the winter.  A scholar from Britain, during his visit to St. Catherine's Monastery, was horrified by this practice; so, he swiped some of the scrolls and smuggled them to B...

This part of the trip is what most of our friends call a "normal holiday".  We checked in at a gorgeous resort on the Red Sea riviera (if you recall the ad, "Where everybody wears a smile").  We couldn't believe that anything in Egypt could live up to that kind of advertising ... but it did.  The resort, food and their obliging staff can't be matched by anything we've experienced before.  Best of all, everything is reasonably priced unlike, say, Fiji.  And the meals h...

Went to Sharm with a friend in february 2007. travelled with thomas Cook. ( Rachel our Rep was so helpful and friendly.)What an amazing Hotel. The staff couldn't do enough for you, always asking if you were okay or if you needed anything. The room was large with two double beds and a great balcony. The food at the hotel was buffet style and repetitive much better value to go along to Naama Bay.. just across the ( busy and lethal) two lane road from the Beach side marriott, where you could wal...

I only stayed two days in Sharm but two days is not enough for Sharm.  Mostly we were in Naama Bay which is the most popular bay in Sharm. You can do many things in Sharm such as diving, snorkeling, trips to desert with quad runners, glass boat tours which you can see the sea from the bottom of the boat, enjoy the night life, visit Sinai Mountain and St Catherine's Monastery etc...I hope i can go there again.
