Just a small town with fishermen 20 years ago, Sharm el Sheik has grown into a popular holiday destination among both divers and all-inclusive package tourists, with huge resorts of most major international hotel chains sprouting everywhere, competing for control of the beach (in fact, except for a very sad little 3- chairs-wide stretch of public beach, all beaches are owned by hotels in Na'ama Bay). With even a security checkpoint for Egyptian passports before entering (tourists are not checked) and no need for visas, Sharm is quite different from the real Egypt.

Aside from sitting in an all-inclusive resort, Sharm offers lots of watersports, especially diving, which is very popular in the beautiful waters of the Ras Mohammed National Park.

In July 2005, Sharm was hit by terrorist attacks, killing over 80 people, including tourists. With tourism being so important for Egypt, this led to even more drastic security measures.
