Shaolin Travelers Hostel Dengfeng Reviews
The icing on the Shaolin cake Mar 10, 2011
This hostel was my favourite during a 2 month travel break I did around China during the winter. At first it appears nothing special, but once you step inside and you see the atmosphere you can quickly feel at home which is really what all travellers are looking for in between all the exciting and stressful bits we seem to get addicted to, right?
The staff are what make this hostel as it is partly owned by a traveller and by a very friendly Chinese girl. They provide excellent detail in the directions, advice and local knowledge which would be enough to keep your travel guide firmly to the bottom of your backpack.
They provide free kung fu lessons in the evening and encourage everyone to share any skills they have picked up in their times. This is a very unique way to bring travellers together, steering away from the more accepted, get them all drunk and playing games method in a refreshingly suitable tactic in line with the more spiritual feel that Dengfeng gives. Dengfeng's spirituality comes from the obviously famous Shaolin Temple, but also the lesser known Song Mt. which is holy to 3 religions living together in harmony.
Buddhism, Daoism and Confucinism.
If you are travelling in China, it's a side of it's culture you can't miss. And this hostel is the best place to call home whilst you explore it.
