Shanksville's history can be traced back to 1798 when it was named after Christian Shank who operated several mills in the area. The town was incorporated into a borough in 1913 and today has a population around 250 people. Shanksville made international news on September 11, 2001 when United Flight 93 crashed in a nearby field during the terrorist attacks.
