Shanker Hotel Kathmandu Reviews

luxury at a reasonable price Dec 11, 2011
I went to the Shanker Hotel after a trek through the Annapurna range and it was a treat after 6 days in trekking huts. A former palace of the Royal family, the hotel is found on palatial grounds close to the heart of the city. Although the hotel at the time was undergoing some renovations, and was slightly shabby and well worn, the setting was unbeatable close as it was to the Thamel area. The food was excellent, tea on the spacious lawn in the afternoon after exploring the city centre and ghats was silver service, and it was still and quiet at night, a welcome respite from the hubub of the city. One criticism (and irritant)at the time was that the laundry service they used was local washerwomen washing in the river, so my whites came back grey and dull which was not of the quality of the hotel. The clothes were trekking clothes but still... Overall highly recommended for the price.

tranquil luxury Jul 21, 2010
The Shanker is a lovely upscale hotel set in a former palace. The hotel is surrounded by a nice garden with swimming pool which creates a quiet and peaceful haven within busy and bustling Kathmandu. The touristy Thamel area is a mere 10 to 15 minutes' walk away and a taxi will set you back about 100 rupies.

The reception and public areas breathe the atmosphere of days gone by but are impeccably clean and well kept. Only the public toilets at the lobby are a disgrace to this hotel and are worn and not very clean.

We had a spacious room on the 6th floor with very comfortable twin beds, a sofa, safe and coffee/tea making facilities. More importantly there was a well functioning A/C unit.

The bathroom, though small was impeccably clean and provided instant hot water and plenty of clean fluffy towels.

Breakfast was served at the lower floor in a magnificently decorated ballroom. This was without any doubt the best and most extensive breakfast on my entire trip. Chefs would prepare your eggs à la minute, there is a selection of fresh fruit, breads, cereal, pastries, yoghurt, juices etc...

Reception staff and the door men were always extremely friendly and made guests feel like royalty.

The wifi at the reception area is rather costly though but there are plenty of internet cafes in the immediate vicinity.
