Shanghai Hotel Ipoh Reviews
Shabby, Cheap Scummy Nov 05, 2012
Cheap very budget option at 40rm a night for a double Ensuite room (three nights). Pretty shabby all round, but had to stay to save on our shrinking budget at this stage of the journey. No bed coverings, although aircon and fan are included in the room. Bathroom is walk-in shower with the dodgiest plumbing I have seen anywhere on this trip, although we did get hot water. Toilet leaked water every flush from water tank. And bathroom looked generally very very shabby. This did not include breakfast as they don’t have facilities for it. They do have free Wifi which is reliable in the foyer but not so reliable in the rooms.
Location is good for Ipoh town centre as you are close to the “Old Town” and its historical architectural buildings, and well placed for the new town, the hawker centres and numerous shops.
Desk staff and hotel owner are very friendly and helpful in advice and taxi services (run by owner) which can prove expensive at 30rm an hour if doing a full day sightseeing of caves etc as he does spin it out with driving around and showing you places that you did not ask to see and are not too startling in the first place. Be clear about what it is you exactly want to see and make sure he sticks to it. Also beware of free meal excursions, as for the budget traveller this can come to more than you are used to spending especially as you will end up paying for the owner to eat. On the plus side you do get to eat at some excellent local restaurants that you probably would not find otherwise, typically 60+ RM, as you end up paying for Mr.Chan too!
