Boiled dumplings at their best Jan 31, 2016
S37°48.765' E144°58.049' Melbourne's passion for dumplings finds its truest expression in this simple little restaurant inside a shopping arcade on 200 Bourke Street. Reservations are not accepted; just enter of queue for a table while reading the rave reviews in the shop window.
Dumplings are boiled, rather than steamed as they are elsewhere. We ordered in December 2015 a dish of 12 little Rachaels for AUS$14.80. The story of its creation is that Mama was rocking her newborn granddaughter to sleep and she felt overwhelmed by the serenity and happiness of this moment. The next instance, a new recipe started to flow into her mind: prawn, calamari, salmon in loving embrace accompanied by chives, Chinese cabbage and a dash of sesame oil for flavour. Are these dumplings as nice as their story of creation? Certainly, they were very delicious. The sesame oil gave it an extra flavour.
King Prawn dumplings are considered the queen of all dumplings. Local king prawns are mixed with fresh chives, black fungus, sesame oil, peanut oil and egg, wrapped in thin homemade dumpling skin. Ten pieces per dish for AUS$20.80. The flavour of the dumpling was really goods. Excellent.
Like so many Chinese restaurants, the interior is unassuming in fluorescent light, tables are greasy and service is impersonal but effective. However, their dumplings are the stars. Recommended.
