Shan Zhai Beijing Reviews
Apr 30, 2007
Supposedly financed by actress and Beijing native Ziyi Zhang, the Shan Zhai restaurant is one of the first organic restaurants in Beijing. I've never put much stock in "organic" foods since in the US it usually just means smaller and more expensive fruits and vegetables, but the food at Shan Zhai was plentiful, affordable, and delicious.
When you walk in you're greeted by the very courteous and attentive wait staff. There are two levels. On the first level is a large ice Buddha sculpture and some tables, private dining rooms, and a bar. On the top level are some tables where the floor is raised and your legs go into the floor like you find in many Thai restaurants in the US.
Be careful of these tables though. Once my friend brought his infant daughter to Shan Zhai when we went to dinner. In the middle of our meal, the hyrdaulic table started to lower on our legs. At first we thought, "No problem, it will just lower a bit and then stop." Then the table started to pinch our legs and so we decided it was best not to risk it and pulled our legs out. The hydraulic table lowered all the way below the floor...who knows if it would have severed our legs if we'd left them! It turns out that my friend's daughter found the remote control for the table and pushed the button to lower the table!
Deadly tables aside, this is an excellent restaurant and I highly recommend it if you like tasty and healthy food in a nice atmosphere at a reasonable price. How can you not like that?
